9 October 2023

The presence of event security guards often gives people a sense of being protected and safe. But what matters most is to know how safe we feel in their presence. Leisure Guard Security aims to ensure public safety by providing security services in the UK. There are many danger zones in the UK that need to be protected and provided safety. Security guards play an important role in ensuring public safety in all areas. However, the event security guards don’t guarantee complete safety and there are certain things that are beyond their reach and control.

Types of Uniformed Security Guards

Uniform security guards come in a variety of forms including police officers, private security guards, military men, etc. Each of them has a specific role and duty to ensure public safety. However, still, you still need to understand the limitations and what security guards can and can’t do. They may provide you safety but they can’t guarantee you complete protection.

Security Guards and Public Safety

According to a survey, where it is asked from 500 participants whether they felt safe in the presence of security guards or not, the majority of people said that they felt very safe which 30%. On the other hand, 26.80 said that they feel safer than normal and 28.15% people said that they neither feel safe nor less safe. Lastly, the remaining 14.87 % of people answered that they either feel less safe than normal or very unsafe.

From the above-mentioned survey, we have come to understand that security guards can’t guarantee 100% safety to people since there are many things that people must take responsibility for themselves. However, the event security officers can only handle issues related to any criminal activities and public support yet there are certain things that people must handle themselves.

What Security Officers Can and Can’t Do

The main duty of event security officers is to handle crime and stop any criminal activity. However, there are certain things that are beyond their reach or they can’t do. The following are some of the duties that security officers can and can’t do:

What security guards can do

Security guards play an important role in safeguarding your business. They not only keep your property and products safe but also protect the area to help your customers, employees, and employers.

The following are the certain things that security guards can do:

1. Removing people from a private property

Event security guards hold the authority to remove you from private property if you trespass. This is the duty of building, construction, and events security guards. They may directly call the police or other authorities if someone refuses to leave the area of private property.

2. Performing a citizen’s arrest

Under some conditions, event security guards can make an arrest but don’t have any other authority to take any matter more than the arrest. They generally perform this arrest and wait for the other agencies to hand it over to them. These security guards have no right to go beyond this basic arrest.

3. Requesting a physical search

Taking entry into certain places needs safety precautions and therefore, performing a physical search is a part of these precautionary measures. Hence, security guards have the authority to request a physical search on you on your behalf.

4. Carry weapons

Event security guards can hold firearms that can be used to seize someone performing any criminal activity. However, not all security officers hold weapons and in order for a security to be armed, they must follow the state’s gun rules if they are allowed to carry weapons and guns.

What security guards can’t do

While security guards can perform a number of duties to protect a business and properties they can’t do everything. Since there are certain things that are under the reach of police and other armed agencies security guards haven’t gone through much training and are not allowed legally allowed to perform the same duties as police do.

The following are the things that security guards can’t do:

1. Searching for someone without their permission

Security guards can search through people’s bags but they can’t search someone without their consent. They can ask to search for a person, but if the person doesn’t allow it, they can’t proceed further.

2. Putting extra pressure

Event security guards do not have the right to put extra pressure on the people or detain them. If any situation demands that one be forced our security guards need to call law enforcement personnel to handle the matter.

3. Pull someone over

Security guards don’t have enough power outside the business or property they are hired to safeguard. They can patrol parking lots and ask questions from people but they lack the right to pull someone over or arrest them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the event security officers play an important role in maintaining security in a particular business. They perform some duties such as dealing with criminals and handling situations related to criminal activities and stopping them. But still, they can’t guarantee complete security that people must understand and follow some safety precautions by themselves. Furthermore, there are certain things security guards can and can’t do. They can help protect a business from criminals and check bags but can’t force people to check without their permission. So, it is important to understand their duties and limitations before hiring them for your business.
